Singapore expects to host over 1.5 million Indian tourists this year, focusing on improving hospitality infrastructure, including hotel accommodation and streamlining visa processes.
Before the lockdown caused by the pandemic, Singapore welcomed 1.4 million Indian tourists in 2019, a figure that later rose to 1.1 million in 2023 but never reached that of the pre-pandemic, VisaGuide.World reports.
Given the potential of the Indian market, Singapore wants to take all the necessary steps to attract as many tourists as possible this year.
As local media reports, the island nation is actively expanding its infrastructure to accommodate tourists and business travelers, with plans to add 9,000 new hotel rooms to the existing 72,000 rooms.
In this regard, the Executive Director of Exhibitions & Conferences at the STB, Poh Chi Chuan, emphasized attracting visitors to occupy these newly added rooms.
He also underscored the importance of restoring flight connectivity between India and Singapore to pre-pandemic levels, expressing hope for resuming regular flights between the two countries.
Indian Visitors Lead Growth in Singapore in 2023 Despite Global Challenges
Based on data provided by STB, in 2023, Singapore welcomed 1.1 million Indian tourists, marking a significant increase of 115 percent in the total number of visitors, reaching 13.6 million from the 6.3 million affected by the pandemic in 2022.
Despite India not being Singapore’s top tourism-generating market, it ranked fifth behind Indonesia (2.3 million), China (1.4 million), and Malaysia (1.1 million), with Australia also ahead of India at 1.1 million tourists who visited Singapore in 2023.
For Indian travelers, Singapore offers various types of visas tailored to the purpose of the visit, including tourism, business engagements, or transit. Each type of visa has specific criteria and eligibility requirements. Indian passport holders are generally required to obtain a visa to enter Singapore, although exceptions apply to holders of diplomatic, service, and official passports.
Indians planning to enter Singapore for leisure travel purposes need to apply for a Tourist Visa. This type of visa allows visitors to explore Singapore’s attractions and culture. However, its holders are not permitted to engage in employment in the country.
As for those who want to enter the country for business purposes, Singapore offers a Business Visa.
