Sabarmati Riverfront sees most foreign tourists this year

Even surpassing Statue of Unity and Sabarmati Ashram, Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad has recorded the highest number of foreign tourists across the state in the first eight months of 2023.

Sabarmati Riverfront has become Ahmedabad’s favourite tourist site in the state with a footfall of 1,07,969 foreigners till August 2023 – a jump from 67,000 foreign tourists from the whole of 2022 – data from Gujarat Tourism Corporation Limited shows. Statue of Unity recorded 25,291 foreign tourists, a slight jump from last August when 22,000 foreigners visited the site.

Further, Ahmedabad, which has been included in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Cities, has become the first choice for foreign tourists coming to Gujarat. Of the 15.4 lakh foreign tourists who visited Gujarat in the eight months of 2023, the highest number – 3.53 lakh – have visited Ahmedabad. In 2022, the figure was 3.63 lakh.

Ahead of World Tourism Day on September 27, a statement issued by the government on Tuesday said: “The tourism industry, which had come to a standstill due to Covid-19, has made a significant comeback in two years. Based on the data, 2021 saw a mere 11,319 tourists, which remarkably surged to 17.77 lakh in 2022. Notably, within just eight months of 2023, Gujarat has already welcomed 15.4 lakh foreign tourists. Projections indicate that by December, the number of foreign tourists visiting Gujarat could potentially reach an impressive 20 lakh.”
The Gujarat Tourism Corporation Limited data showed that tourist spots like Ambaji, Somnath and Dwarka are becoming the preferred destinations for foreigners bagging the third, fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
