Tamil Nadu is one of the leading states in the sector of Tourism in India. As per the India Tourism Statistics report of 2023, Tamil Nadu stands at the second position in terms of domestic tourist visits in 2022. Over the years, the government of Tamil Nadu has focused its attention on the tourism sector. In the wake of this development, the authorities are also introducing novel facilities to make sightseeing easier for tourists. One such example is the commencement of a battery car at the Botanical Garden in Ooty in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu.
Numerous innovative innovations are being taken by the Nilgiris district administration to attract tourists to the state. The Botanical Garden in Ooty is one of the most visited places by tourists in the state. The garden is spread over an area of 55 hectares encompassing different types of plant species and rare tree species. To make the experience easier for elderly people, the government authorities have introduced an electric car in the garden. The motorists told Local18, that the vehicle can drive up to 40 kilometres in the plains and up to 35 kilometres in the hilly areas after charging it for six hours.
The electric car is parked near the entrance gate of the Botanical Garden. Apart from the ticket fee of the park, the visitors have to pay an extra Rs 30 to avail the benefits of this vehicle. A total of 7 to 8 people can travel inside the battery vehicle at once. It is primarily used for elderly people as they find it hard to cover the entire garden at once. This is the first time that such a vehicle has been introduced in the park. Although, this is not the first time that electric vehicles have been used for this purpose. Several resorts and hotels also use this facility for their guests.
The Botanical Garden is 2.6 km from the Ooty Bus Stand. You can reach this tourist destination via Commercial Road. This garden was laid out in 1897 by the Marquis of Tweedale. A 20 million-year-old fossilized tree is one of the highlights of this garden.
