The Police in North Bengal, considering the region’s high potential for tourism, has launched special vehicles named “Tourist Bandhu (friend)” to assist the tourists in the area.

Dooars, specifically the foothills of Darjeeling, have several interesting tourist spots, including wildlife sanctuary and forest areas. Speaking to News18, Umesh Ganpat, (IPS) SP, Jalpaiguri said, “On September 29, two vehicles with the banner of ‘Tourist Bandhu’ were flagged off from Jalpaiguri police lines. The vehicles were specially deployed to assist the tourists visiting the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district.”

He further added that “Each vehicle with the strength of one officer, two constables and two civil volunteers patrolling Jalpaiguri’s Dooars area attracts a large number of tourists during vacation time.” Ganpat said that the vehicles visit all the significant tourist destinations to ensure the safety of all the tourists and also — if required — to provide any assistance.

Since there have been instances where tourists were cheated or were faced with various problems, their safety and security holds utmost importance. Therefore, these dedicated vans will be present at all such locations to look after the tourists’ requirements.

According to sources, this initiative has essentially been taken by the Jalpaiguri police, but this program will be initiated for other districts of North Bengal as well. Sources in the administrative department have told News18 that although the program has started in Jalpaiguri, later it will be implemented in other areas too.

Tourism in North Bengal has a lot of potential, opportunities and people from the tourism industry believe that if such support is provided by the administration then it will help boost its tourism industry.
