CALANGUTE: The Calangute traffic police cell on Tuesday launched a special drive against private vehicles which are being illegally rented out to tourists in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act as part of a State-wide drive.
Only vehicles with rent-a-bike or rent-a-cab permits are allowed to be given on hire. These bikes or cars should also have yellow number plates. However, most of the tourists who arrive in the State are unaware of this rule and they often hire private vehicles with regular black and white number plates.
“Renting private vehicles to tourists is in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. Such vehicles will be targeted during the drive,” SP Traffic Akshat Kaushal said, urging tourists to check the vehicle documents before taking it on rent.
With the start of the peak tourism season, tourists hiring private vehicles has become common in the coastal belt because of which it was decided to launch an inspection drive to check the illegal use of private vehicles, Calangute traffic police cell said.
