Srinagar: Kashmir has undergone a remarkable transformation in tourism since the abrogation of Article 370. Formerly characterized by political uncertainties, the region is now witnessing positive changes that have breathed new life into its tourism industry. In the current year alone, over three million tourists have flocked to Kashmir, solidifying its status as a premier destination.

More than 60 lakh tourists, including both foreigners and locals, have explored the beauty of Kashmir since the removal of Article 370, which abolished restrictions on non-residents owning property in the region.

The scrapping of Article 370 has catalyzed investments in infrastructure, leading to enhanced connectivity and accessibility. Previously, the perception of Kashmir being synonymous with curfews, encounters, and riots had hindered such progress.

Director of Tourism Kashmir, Raja Yaqoob Khan, revealed to Republic TV that the tourist count has exceeded three million in the current year, with expectations of even higher figures. The Tourism Department has established helpline numbers across the Kashmir valley to provide support to tourists.

Upgraded roads, expanded airports, and improved transportation networks have made it easier for visitors to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir. The government’s commitment to tourist safety, coupled with heightened security measures, has instilled confidence in travelers, resulting in a significant increase in both domestic and international arrivals.

A representative from a local Travel Agency at Dal Lake conveyed to Republic TV, “Organizing trips to Kashmir has become a delight since the abrogation of Article 370. Increased accessibility and security measures have boosted our clients’ confidence, allowing us to tailor unique experiences, making Kashmir a top choice for travelers.”

The newfound stability has paved the way for cultural events, festivals, and exhibitions, offering tourists a deeper engagement with Kashmir’s rich cultural tapestry.

Foreign tourist Andrew Johs, near Nishat Garden, shared with Republic TV, “Once considered a terror hotspot, Kashmir has transformed into a heavenly escape. The breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and a sense of tranquility make it hard to believe its tumultuous past.”

Beyond the traditional attractions, Kashmir actively promotes adventure tourism, including trekking at Yusmarg, mountaineering over Gangbal Haramukh, Gulmarg’s Gandola rides, and water sports at Pahalgam. This diversification has attracted a broader spectrum of travelers seeking unique and immersive experiences.

The positive changes in the tourism sector have not only benefited travelers but have also provided a significant economic boost to the local economy. The increased influx of tourists has generated demand for local goods, services, and handicrafts, benefiting hoteliers, Shikara riders, houseboat owners, and others in the tourism sector.

A local handicraft seller expressed to Republic TV, “The positive changes in Kashmir tourism have been a boon for my business. Tourists are now more willing to explore and purchase authentic Kashmiri products, which was not possible before the abrogation of Article 370.”

The positive transformation in Kashmir’s tourism sector has gained international recognition. With improved infrastructure and a focus on sustainable tourism, Kashmir is emerging as a must-visit destination, attracting travelers from around the globe.
